Frozen Bananas

When my father recounts the hardest part of being a father/stepfather to six kids who were all within six years of each other, he likes to tell the story about the summer he tried to take us all to the state fair.
My sister Lauren and I, the two oldest, were probably 13. That means […]

Brenner

There is a period of childhood, between the age where your parents make you what you ask for and the age when you can drive yourself to get a burrito right before dinner if you don’t want what’s being served, where you are pretty much stuck with what your parents have planned. For me, […]

Just Like the First Lady

While the rest of the country has spent the last few months going on and on about Michelle Obama’s svelte arms and dynamite fashion sense, D.C. has been abuzz about something else — her White House garden. This garden is the first vegetable-producing plot at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s war-era victory garden. […]

Monkey Bread

A few weeks ago I was wandering aimlessly through Williams-Sonoma fantasizing about what life would be like if I owned more whisks (think of the possibilities!) when I stumbled across a monkey bread dish. With a wave of nostalgia I bought it and then was immediately plunged down memory lane.
Monkey bread was one of […]

Archer Farm’s Organic Fruit Strips

When I was in elementary school I was the kid with the whole-wheat sandwich and all natural real-fruit rolls. These days it’s a lot more common to see tofurkey wraps in elementary school cafeterias, and I think I can safely assume that not as many kids are getting made fun of for not having […]

Ice Cream Sandwiches

Recently I had this conversation with a three year old:
Me: For lunch today, we’re going to have sandwiches. What kind of sandwich would you like?
Her: Pizza.
Me: Let’s talk about what a sandwich is. A sandwich is two pieces of bread, meat, and maybe some cheese. What kind of meat would you like?
Her: […]

Alligator Cookies

When I was growing up, one of my favorite books was Alligator Cookies, by James Young. The book is about two children who come across their uncle’s recipe for Alligator Cookies. The recipe calls for real alligator, so they have to go out to catch one. While they’re out looking for an […]

Elena Rosemond

As someone who has been a childcare provider in almost ever capacity imaginable (from swim teacher to museum educator), I know that the one place that kids almost always have fun is the kitchen. A product of parents and grandparents that relished passing on their love of cooking, I grew up in and around the kitchen, stirring, squishing, and snapping. I believe that more love and tradition is experienced in the kitchen than anywhere else, and I love sharing my passion for cooking and baking with the little ones around me. Plus, how cute do kids look in little aprons? I write for my own southern food blog, Biscuits and Such (www.biscuitsandsuch.com), as well as for the Well Fed Network’s Fit Fare, Just Baking, and Kids Cuisine.
