Thinking Ahead

Seed Catalogs

As I write this there are about 18 inches of snow on my front lawn. We are well-entrenched in winter, and spring and summer seem so far away. Comfort food has center stage on the dinner table, and cold salads have lost their appeal temporarily. However, over the last two weeks some interesting pieces of mail have made their way into my home, promising of all the good things to come in the year ahead. I am speaking, of course, of the long-awaited 2008 Seed Catalogs. Yes, I said seeds, as in growing and gardening.

Little did I know, when I filled out the request form for these beautiful color catalogs, that my children would become so enchanted by the vegetables lurking within. This could be the year! This could be the year we have a major breakthrough in discovering new vegetables! As I sat with my soon-to-be-four year old son and flipped page after page, he insisted that I mark the ones he wanted to try most. Many of his choices were truly surprising.

He chose the rainbow chard, because it just looked delicious and crispy. He chose two varieties of eggplant, because he’s never had them, and maybe they taste really good. He chose some purple carrots in addition to the orange ones because he’s never seen purple carrots before. In the tomato section we marked red, yellow, orange, green, and white tomatoes. Then, when we came to the zucchini, he instantly stuck out his tongue and told me he definitely didn’t want zucchini. But then a few seconds later, he pointed to the yellow zucchini and suggested that maybe we try those ones, because maybe he will like the yellow zucchini.

I have already decided that this year’s garden is going to be selected by my children. Maybe this will the magic year, and maybe it won’t, but either way, they are both interested, and I can only hope that this intense interest will continue on into the harvest.
