Becoming a Work at Home Mom for the Food
I have just switched to working at home all but one day a week, and food was a major reason for my decision. That might sound strange, but it has been difficult to be a foodie mom and a working mom.
I love to cook, and I believe strongly in feeding healthy, fresh meals to my kids. And I am a pretty hardcore workaholic, career woman type. I am so not the happy housewife type.
But by the time I got the kids home on a weekday, they were starving and there was just no time to prepare a decent meal. So that meant a rush job to get them something healthy in a few seconds (options are pretty limited, so it usually meant diced fruits and veggies was as good as it got), or it meant resorting to junky convenience foods.
Many times, my husband and I would then have another rushed meal for ourselves after the kids went to bed.
It isn’t just about dinner time, either. I want to have more control over what my kids eat all day, instead of leaving it to daycare to decide. I want to have more time to cook with my kids.
I want more time to do all those culinary things I keep meaning to do but don’t have time to do with a strict 9-to-5 schedule, like baking bread or making spaghetti sauce from scratch. (I’m sure I’ll still find I don’t have the time, but I can certainly dream, right?)
Food isn’t the only reason I wanted to work from home. I wanted to spend more quality time with the kids, and not just have the Monday through Friday marathon from waking to bedtime. But Slow Food is part of a slower lifestyle, and that’s all connected. I want more time to enjoy my kids and for us all to enjoy our food.

I work at home as medical transcriptionist. I like to make money so I put in a good deal of hours. I don’t “love” to cook but do want to make healthy meals that everyone likes. I like “quick” meals mostly. I’ve heard about a new cookbook called The 4 Ingredient Cookbook- all the recipes include only 4 ingredients. What do you think of this?
