KidsHealth for Kids

Halloween CandyWith visions of mountains of Halloween candy dancing through my daughter’s head, I thought this would be a good time to remind her of healthy eating habits and the importance of good dental care. For the most part my children are very healthy eaters, but when faced with a bucket full of sugary goodness, common sense sometimes flies out the window. I went in search of a kid-friendly website to help reinforce the healthy message for my second-grader.

What I found was perfect. KidsHealth has a fantastic website for kids that can tell them anything they wanted to know about health and their body. Right now, in fact, they have a great conversation online where they interviewed several children about their take on how to best enjoy Halloween candy. Some of the answers were surprising to me as a parent, and I can only hope that those are the same thoughts shared by my daughter. KidsHealth also has a very nice recipe section — including recipes for kids with special dietary needs. My daughter saw that and asked what lactose and celiac are, and that really opened up to a whole conversation with her about how lucky she is to be healthy.

KidsHealth approaches issues that are important to kids on their level. It’s easy to understand without being condescending, and my daughter easily spent a good hour poring over the website. We had quite a few meaningful discussions about health and her body, and I can only hope that this continues over time. She had many questions answered, including what makes butterflies in her stomach, and what exactly is a booger. With additional sites for parents and teens, KidsHealth is a great resource for us, and we plan to have it bookmarked for a long time to come.
