KIWI Rewards Healthy School Meals
When I was still in school, there was a big scandal when the first President Bush defended nutritionally poor lunches by saying, “Ketchup is a vegetable.” In some places, this kind of thinking hasn’t changed much, but many school systems are taking the initiative to provide truly healthy and nutritious lunch options.
Does your local school rise to the challenge of affordable, interesting, healthy lunch? If so, let KIWI magazine know. They are sponsoring a “KIWI Crusaders” contest looking for schools with the healthiest food policies. Winning schools will receive $3,500 and will be featured in the magazine.
Here’s what they are looking for:
Entries will be judged, to determine the winners (as described above), based on the following judging criteria: Use of natural and organic products (20%); Use of fresh fruits and vegetables (15%); Nutrition policy/program and education (20%); Healthy vending machine policy (10%); Overall nutrition; low-fat, whole grain, sugar (20%) and Meal options; vegetarian, non-dairy beverages, culturally diverse meals (10%); nominator’s essay (5%).
Head on over to KIWI’s web site for more details or to nominate your local school — all schools, public and private, from preschool to high school, are eligible.
