Ratatouille is Technically Accurate

Kids Cuisine has talked about Disney’s latest smash movie hit Ratatouille, but it’s worth one more mention. Why? Because the finicky French apparently have been wowed by the animated Hollywood movie!

It was recently reported in The Washington Post that French reviewers, viewers and even the country’s top chefs are gushing over the movie’s technical accuracy and attention to culinary detail.

The French love the movie so much that Thomas Sotinel declared it in the often stuffy daily newspaper, Le Monde, “One of the greatest gastronomic films in the history of cinema.”

Truth be told, it’s been reported that the Pixar movie team spent weeks scrutinizing some of the most prominent chefs and kitchens in Paris. It’s been said that Pixar even set up microphones in French kitchens and recorded the atmospheres at different times of the day.

So, here’s another reason to take your kids to the movie Ratatouille: a cartoon (what kid doesn’t like a good cartoon?) that’s accurate and shows true passion. It’s not like a Road Runner cartoon when Wile E. Coyote gets bowled over by a boulder, ends up flat as a pancake and then walks away (don’t get me wrong, that’s funny stuff, but….).

I haven’t gotten around to seeing the movie yet, but can’t wait! Let me know if you think the movie is as accurate to culinary ways as it’s being reported.

I am not at all surprised the French are pleased, and they are pretty particular about things like this (they are pretty passionate about food and film). I used to live in France, and I was quite impressed with how they captured France. I’m not a chef, but the kitchen scenes sure seemed accurate.

I can’t believe you haven’t seen the movie yet, though! Get, get! Allez!
