Ahh, the power of straws

single-straw_choc.JPGMy little brother was and is a chocolate milk fiend. He won’t drink milk any other way — white milk just doesn’t cut it with him (OK, he’s 11). My mother long ago gave up trying to get him to drink milk straight. To be honest, I mostly agree with him. I only drink plain white milk to wash down dessert. Otherwise, I prefer a little flavoring. I’m sure we can’t be the only people who feel this way.

When we would go out to eat, the milk thing often caused problems. My brother liked to get milk instead of soda or juice, and almost every restaurant had milk available, but many didn’t have chocolate milk. It isn’t really feasible to carry around chocolate syrup (imagine the mess!). Without that option, he was back to soda with no nutritive value.

Times have apparently changed. There is a new product that makes flavored milk on the fly a real possibility. The Sipahh straw contains little flavor beads. When you suck milk through the straw, it picks up chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or banana flavoring. No mess, and they are oh so portable. I haven’t seen Sipahhs in stores, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for them. As soon as I find some, I will be sending a package to my little brother!

Oh, and parents, there’s something available for you, too! The company also makes Mai’a straws that will flavor milk with instant coffee for a portable iced latte. Sounds intriguing!

They sell these at Walgreens - and they are WONDERFUL. I included one in each of the favor bags at my son’s birthday party and almost every parent called to ask where they could get them.

I love these straws, too. But doesn’t adding chocolate to milk make it impossible for the body to absorb the calcium?

What will they think of next? What a great idea! I’ll have to hunt down some of these to give them a try.
