Guilt-Free Fast Food for Kids?
Sure, it’s possible. In a recent issue of Family Circle magazine, Ronni Litz Julien, R.D., author of What Should I Feed My Kids?, laid down the law with six suggestions on making the healthiest choices for kids (and even adults!) when you have to hit the drive-thru lane of your local fast food joint.
Say (No) Cheese, Please. On a sandwich, just one slice of cheddar packs over 100 calories. On pizza, ask for half the usual amount - your kids won’t even notice the difference.
Dress for Success. Save up to 150 calories by using low-fat and fat-free dressings instead of full-fat versions.
Eat Like a Kid. When in doubt, order a child-size portion for fewer calories and less fat.
Watch Out for Condiments. Chicken sandwiches are often slathered with mayo or other calorie-filled sauces; plain mustard is a much healthier option.
Click Before You Pick. Before chowing down, check out calorieking.com. The site offers nutritional breakdowns for 200 fast food chains and restaurants.
Swap the Soda Pop. Fountain drinks (loaded with sugar and calories) come in alarmingly large sizes. For kids, take advantage of the low-fat milk and juice options many chains offer. Moms, stick to H2O with a slice of lemon. Or top off diet soda with a splash of regular to boost flavor without adding many calories.
