Triple Play
When Cate passed long some information about the Triple Play Game Plan, I was a little bit skeptical. The program is put out by the Boys & Girls Club of America, which offer some great kids’ programs. However, its two major sponsors are Kraft and Coca-Cola. Neither of these companies is synonymous with healthy choices in my mind. Though both make some healthy products, I mostly think of Velveeta and Coke when I think of their wares.
Having read a little more about the program, I guess I may have judged too harshly. Triple Play is actually pretty cool. The “triple” features are mind, body, and soul, or more specifically, eating right, fun physical activites, and character and confidence building. The combo is needed for a healthy, happy life.
The food section is great; most of the information is straight from the USDA food pyramid. I was very pleased that despite the sponsorship there were no brand names listed in the recipes or snack suggestions. There are tips on working more whole grains, fruits, and veggies into each meal, but the most useful thing is definitely the portion sizes.

1. What does one serving of pasta look like?
a) a baseball
b) a golf ball
c) a softball
2. How big is a 1-serving baked potato?
a) Nerf football
b) computer mouse
c) two adult fists
I also like the Healthy Teeth and Bones Bingo, though I suggest a fun modification. The instructions have you just calling out the words. I think it would be more fun, and much more healthy, if each player had to earn the spaces (by eating a piece of cheese, flossing, taking vitamins, etc.). You might need to change or interpret some of the words a bit…
Though I’m not going to spend much time writing about the fitness and character parts of the program, that doesn’t mean you should take a look. There are hints for getting reluctant kids involved with sports and suggestions for stretches and hydration. The character and confidence features games and discussion ideas.
This guide is a definite must read — full of useful, concrete information for parents.
