March is National Nutrition Month

With the turning of the seasons comes more opportunity for children and families to be more active. Perhaps that’s what the American Dietetic Association was thinking when they proclaimed March to be National Nutrition Month. Today as I walked into my doctor’s office, I was greeted by a large display declaring that 100% Fad Free is the way to be. It made me smile — I though it was quirky and catchy, and right on target with what we should be telling out children about diet and nutrition. I stopped for a minute to check out the poster and the literature and was satisfied that this was a good message to be getting out there.

But what do we actually tell our children when it comes to nutrition and eating healthy? No doubt most parents like me tell their children “it’s good for you,” and leave it at that. So I went in search of some fun nutrition material and struck solid gold. Nutrition Explorations is every parent’s and educator’s answer to nutrition education. It features games and activities that teach while kids play, and the website itself is fun and colorful and very inviting to the little people. The kitchen section features kid-friendly recipes that are both healthy and delicious. My daughter has been quite busy exploring this website; she is delighted to learn more about what she eats and how it will keep her healthy. It helps to reinforce what she has been learning at school and is a worthwhile reference for adults as well. Check it out, your kids will enjoy it.
