Fruit Ripples
I am always on the lookout for a new snack idea for my kids. When we’re at home, snack time is often fresh fruits and vegetables or crackers and cheese. But when traveling, or sending a snack to school, the possibilities become a little more limited. Portability is key, with nutrition being a secondary factor for me. So when I saw a new product by General Mills called Fruit Ripples, I instantly was curious. Located in the fruit snack and granola bar aisle, this is a new concept in snack food, and I bought a box right away. I was eager for both my kids to try it, and we wasted no time in tearing open the box.
What we found was 5 little packets with a very cheerful smiley faced apple on it. The flavor we had chosen was cinnamon apple, and we all set to work tasting and trying them out. My kids are not big fans of dried apples — they would much rather eat the real thing. But this promised crispy baked apple pieces. And pieces they were. Rather small pieces, in fact. They tasted like cinnamon flavored apples and had a pleasing crunch. My son ate a few pieces before leaving the room, and my daughter ate a larger piece and then proclaimed them yucky.
One tiny packet of these dried apple bits contains 1 serving of fruit at 50 calories a pack. And while I thought they were tasty, it would take much more than one packet of fruit ripples to sway a hungry tummy. They are indeed portable, but then again, what is more portable than an apple itself? I could see taking these Fruit Ripples on a camping trip or a fishing expedition, but they likely won’t make their way into my shopping cart again anytime soon.
