Tips for eating out

Sometimes the best comfort food is one you don’t have to cook for yourself. There is definitely something to be said for relaxing and having someone bring your meal to you. However, it can be hard to enjoy a restaurant meal, particularly one at a nice restaurant, when you are trying to wrangle unhappy kids.

Luckily, two recent articles have offered us some great tips on how to make restaurant dining a great experience for guests of all ages. Here are some of the best tips!

Keep the meal quick. Kids have much less patience than most adults, and any meal that lasts an hour or more is probably not going to go smoothly.

Choose a booth. Kids like them, their messes are contained, and if they are on the inside, it is much harder for little ones to hop up and run around the room.

Pick a kid-friendly place. Louder and busier restaurants are probably a good choice. Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants are often good choices, and you don’t have to stick with big national chains (though lots of chain restaurants have great kid menus and activities).

Watch the adult-kid ratio. As one article says, “bring reinforcements.” Inviting other grown-up family members gets you more people to talk to the kids and help them have a good time.

Keep talking. If kids feel like they are part of the conversation, they are less likely to start whining that it’s time to go. This is especially important if you are going out with other adults. Make a special effort to include the kids in those conversations. I mean, how would you like it if someone invited you to dinner and then talked only to other people at the table?

There are many more tips in the articles. What are your strategies for great dining out?

Best dining out tip: talk to your children BEFORE you go out - treat the event like a school field trip. Let them know what to expect (menu, rhythm of the meal) and what YOU and other diners expect (crawling under tables, shouting, throwing, pointing are all disturbing to others). Preparation is key!

When my boys were toddlers, I kept a small bag of toys, crayons, and books in my car. We’d tote this little bag of fun into restaurants to keep them occupied during our visit.
