Need some help with comfort food ideas?
The problem with some comfort food is that it walks a fine line between familiar and blah. Sometimes I get in a mood where even the old stand-bys just don’t cut it.
I was in one of those moods yesterday while I was walking through Target. Luckily, I stumbled into the DVD section. As you may know, Target has a deal with the Food Network as the exclusive distributors of box sets featuring their celebrity chefs. I picked up the new Alton Brown collection and was delighted! His current collection is “More Super Sweets, Family Favorites, and Say Cheese.”
The Family Favorites DVD puts new spins on casseroles, potatoes, and mac ‘n cheese. Alton offers his typical wacky suggestions, like baking casseroles in cheap terracotta planters so you won’t be annoyed if your dish gets lost or broken. He also explains in detail the best uses for each type of potato (and wait ’til you see where he keeps potatoes in his kitchen!). I’ll be watching the mac ‘n cheese episode tonight!
Unfortunately, these collections aren’t available online, so you’ll have to visit your local Target to find them. If you happen to like Rachael Ray or Paula Deen, they’re available too.
