Sweet and gooey comfort
This week at Kids Cuisine we will be focusing on comfort food. Today is the first snow day for many kids in my area, so I think this is perfect timing.
My favorite comfort food is something most people would think a special occasion food — chocolate fondue. Fondue is not just something you can get at The Melting Pot; it is easy and fun to make at home. And it’s not just a refined decadence for adults — kids love the stuff! The hands-on aspect of dipping things into warm chocolate is great fun for everyone.
To start with, you need chocolate. My personal preference is for dark, but most kids I know prefer milk. I made a batch yesterday using melted Hershey bars, and it was a big hit.
Chocolate fondue is simple. Just break chocolate into small pieces in a double boiler. (I used 3 large bars for this batch.) Have about a cup of cream or whole milk on hand and add it bit by bit until the chocolate reaches the consistency you want, smooth and easy to dip. If the chocolate is too hard, you will lose your dippers in it.
Speaking of dippers, your best bests are berries, bananas, and shortbread or other plain cookies. Marshmallows can also be a good option (but my husband hates them, so none at our house!)
Once the chocolate is melted, you can either bring it to the table in the double boiler or transfer it to a fondue pot if you have one. Then lay out the dippers, gather your family, and enjoy! A perfect warming treat for a cold winter’s night.

Mmmm, love fondue, and love The Melting Pot. They just opened up a new one near us that we need to make a point of visiting. My easiest fondue recipe? Take Nutella, nuke in microwave, dip and eat. Yum!
