Cooking classes for kids

I learned most of my cooking skills from helping my mom prepare food for our very large family. I didn’t take my first cooking class until I was 24, but oh did I love it! Since then, I’ve been hooked on learning new techniques from great chefs.

Your kids don’t have to wait until they are adults to try out a cooking class. Whole Foods grocery stores offer kids cooking classes on a regular basis. These classes feature organic goodies that are often pretty nutritious too. Best of all, the stores subsidize the costs of the classes, so most don’t cost much more than $5 a person.

If you happen to live in Texas, the Kids Cooking Company offers an awesome array of classes ranging from Mommy and Me for 2 1/2 to 4 year olds all the way up to an in depth afterschool program for 5-12 year olds.

As you might expect from such a foodie city, New York is teeming with options for your kids. There are classes at kid-specific cites, adult cooking schools, and even a few restaurants.

In New Jersey, Kitchen Kapers offers kids classes as well as separate teen classes. These would be a great gift for a high schooler preparing to leave for college — studying is always better on a stomach filled with something more than ramen noodles!

After your kids have been to a few of these classes, you’ll be able to sit back and have them prepare gourmet meals… now that’s a gift that keeps on giving!
