Resolved: A New Year for Food
I’ve spent most of the long weekend thinking about my New Year’s Resolutions, and I have a few that are food related. I hope that these are all achievable and enjoyable goals.
1. In 2007, I will eat out less. Restaurant meals are one of my family’s biggest expenses, and restaurant meals tend to be less healthy and well-balanced than home-cooked meals. I hope to put the money we save towards a few special events like fine dining at memorable restaurants.
2. Cook more. This one goes hand-in-hand with number one. I have a whole bookshelf devoted to cookbooks, including great ones like The New Best Recipe Cookbook and The Best Recipes in the World, but these days I rarely use them. When I get home from work, I’m more likely to boil up some pasta and make a simple sauce or just make grilled cheese and soup. There are many new dishes and cuisines that I would love to master.
3. Make dining more social. We just finished hosting a week worth of holiday events for 10+ people, and while it was hard work providing meals for all these people, we also had a lot of fun. This experience has shown us that we can handle hosting more events. We are making it a goal to invite family or friends over at least once a month. By doing this, we can stay in better touch with loved ones and share the joy of a good meal.
4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. If every time I was hungry I reached for a piece of fruit instead of processed food, I’d be so much healthier. This year, I want to make a sincere effort to actually eat the 5 servings of fruits and veggies recommended each day. Not sure what counts as a serving? Check out this site.
What are your resolutions this year?
