Good News!

Have a picky eater?  Know a picky eater? Tired of meal after meal of your little one pushing away food in favor of the familiar and boring?  Then you simply have to rush out and purchase the latest issue of Eating Well Magazine.  The Jan/Feb 2007 issue features an article by Cynthia Sass, M.P.H. and R.D., called “Retrain Your Taste Buds.”  This article explores the subject of foods we prefer to eat, and the reason behind the choices we make.  It’s a fascinating article, and worth the purchase price of the magazine itself.

Of particular interest to me was a section that explored children’s choices and their preferences for food. According to studies published, the best way to teach your children that healthy food is good for them and delicious to eat is to show them.  That means it’s up to Mom and Dad to put good food on their plates as an example.  If Mom doesn’t eat her vegetables, chances are good that kids won’t eat them either.  As children see their parents and loved ones enjoying fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, they will think about trying them as well, and over time, will incorporate those foods into their approved list.

It’s a win-win situation!  Not only do you get to eat healthier and make wise eating choices, but you also get to set an example for the younger crowd at your dining table.  So pile on the leafy greens and enjoy slices of ripe fruit for dessert, you’re setting an example that could have a lifetime of benefits for your children and for yourselves.
