Kids Cook on TV
It’s rare to see kids cooking on American TV. Occasionally one of the Food Network chefs will include a child or two in the food preparation, but most often food TV is a grown-up’s world.
Not so in New Zealand. New Zealand’s TV2 has a great short program, Cool Kids Cooking. Each under-10-minute episode features a chef and kids making a recipe or two. It’s a fast paced and high energy show, complete with the whimsy of the “Head Chef,” who is literally just a head on a table.
There are two episodes available online at Cool Kids Cooking. These shows will introduce you to Pacific Patties (made with beef, bacon, and taro) and Pizza Kebabs. The website also offers recipes for all of the shows. The food is a bit different from your typical American fare, but not so much as to put kids off. The site is very kids friendly, with games and fun looks behind the scenes of the show.
Best of all, Cool Kids Cooking is sponsored by New Zealand’s 5-a-day fruits and vegetables initiative. They make sure that each recipe is well balanced and heavy on the veggies.

There’s a short cooking show for kids on Noggin- I want to say it’s Cooking with Luis, and it amazes me what this little boy churns out of his kitchen. He can’t be more than 7 or 8, and he puts together whole parties and food like empanadas. I wish there was more of that out there, because my kids loooove watching another child cooking.
