Bento-inspired lunch boxes

I was lucky enough to get a great bento box for lunch today from Teaism, and as I was eating I wondered why I don’t do this every day. Bento boxes are common in Japanese restaurants, especially at lunch.

A typical bento box provides small portions of several simple, fairly healthy foods. This is great for several reasons:

1) Small portions make it easier to pace yourself and be aware of what you are eating.
2) This style of eating satisfies the need for some variety.
3) Combining several types of foods makes it much easier to put together a well-rounded and nutritious meal.
Delicious lunch!

The ladies over at http://www.laptoplunches.com/ had the same idea. Their lunch boxes for kids or adults are modeled on a bento box. Each box is designed to hold 4 separate reusable containers. The containers will inspire you to come up with great new items for kids (and adult) lunches.

The website is loaded with recipes and ideas, so head on over and get inspired!

[…] Last week I introduced you to the wonder that is a Laptop Lunchbox. Those unique boxes are just begging for great things to fill them. Jennifer McCann at Vegan Lunch Box has taken on the challenge and come up with hundreds of recipes. She’s a “vegan activist who loves to cook (and eat!),” so you’re guaranteed some great, healthy treats. I checked out the Laptop Lunchboxes and was amazed at the variety of items they showed being placed in children’s lunches. I had to admit my first thought was, “my child would never eat that” and my second thought was, “what a lot of work for 5:30 in the morning” But it has challenged me to start thinking more healthy about what I offer my kids to eat at all of our meals, not just in the lunch box. They also had some great tips for picky eaters.
